WEST SIDE STORY
"West Side Story" is a musical by Leonard Bernstein, based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and set in New York in the 1950s. It tells the tragic love story of Tony and Maria, who find each other despite belonging to rival youth gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
CONTENT
In a neighbourhood in New York, two youth gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, fight for supremacy. Tony, a former member of the Jets, meets Maria, the sister of the Sharks' leader Bernardo, at a dance. The two immediately fall in love. However, their love is put to the test by the hostility of their gangs. Tony and Maria dream of a future together and meet in secret. Meanwhile, the Jets and the Sharks are planning a big fight. Tony tries to mediate the conflict. Tony tries to mediate the conflict, but the fight ends tragically: Tony kills Bernardo in a heat of passion after Bernardo kills his friend Riff. Maria is distraught, but forgives Tony and they plan to escape together. A misunderstanding leads Tony to believe that Maria is dead and he calls for Chino, Bernardo's friend, to kill him. Chino ends up shooting Tony, and Maria holds the dying Tony in her arms. In the end, the two gangs realise the futility of their hatred and carry Tony's body away together, symbolising hope for a more conciliatory future. The musical premiered in 1957 and was first made into a film in 1961. The first German-language performance took place at the Volksoper Vienna in 1968.

How to get to Kufstein Fortress:
Footpath: On all performance days, the venue can be reached most quickly and easily, and moreover free of charge, on foot via an asphalted road, the Kaiserjägerweg (only three minutes from the town square). We strongly recommend this approximately 10-minute walk, which also offers a wonderful view of the imposing fortress complex.
Panoramic elevator and lift:
In addition to the footpath, there is also the possibility of using the panorama railroad, or the lift. Both municipal transportation options can be used at a special price of EUR 2,- per person upon presentation of a Musicalsommer ticket valid on the respective day of the event. Tickets for the elevator or panorama railroad can be purchased on site at the elevator ticket office and entitle the holder to ascent and descent. The ascent to the fortress is possible one hour before the start of the performance with the panorama railroad as well as with the lift, the descent, however, only with the lift.
Please note:
Neither the lift nor the cable car leads directly into the venue. The path from the exit of the lift or the panorama lift to the venue is steep and takes considerably more time than the walk to the venue. Furthermore, there may be waiting times due to the limited transport capacity of the cable car and lift.
The event area is only open one hour before the start of the game. Dogs, baby carriages and drinks are prohibited, as is smoking in the stands and in passages leading to the stands. Children are not allowed to enter the stadium until they are five years old. For safety reasons, the authorities prohibit the bringing of drinks, bottles, containers and other liquids into the fortress area!
Visitors:inside are allowed to take anti-alcoholic drinks up to a maximum of 0.3 liters in plastic bottles; for safety / official reasons no glass or thermos bottles.
